Three new artworks will be unveiled in the Athletics Forest, which is based on the concept of understanding the world through the body and thinking of the world three-dimensionally.

Balance Stepping Stones through the Invisible World
teamLab, 2020-, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: teamLab
Artwork: https://borderless.teamlab.art/jp/ew/balance_stepping_stones_tokyo/

The variously-shaped Balance Stepping Stones were developed by teamLab. When a person steps on the stones, they change interactively, emitting a color tone that affects the space. And when a person steps on the stones, they swing in various ways, so it is necessary to maintain balance to keep from falling.

While jumping across the Balance Stepping Stones, people cross over into the normally invisible world of microorganisms. When a person steps on a Balance Stepping Stone, that stone’s color is transmitted into the microscopic life.

Hopscotch for Geniuses: Bounce on the Water
teamLab, 2020-, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi
作品: https://borderless.teamlab.art/jp/ew/hopscotch_tokyo/

This is a game of hopscotch where you hop on the circles, triangles, and squares in the water.

When you land on the same shape several times in a row, a fish, butterfly, or bird is born. If you jump on many of the same shapes in a row, even more animals will appear.

And, if you consecutively jump on the same-colored shapes, that color will spread throughout the space.

If you touch the fish, butterflies, or birds that move along the walls, the animals will dissolve into the world.

【New Artwork in the Borderless World】
Reversible Rotation, Flying Beyond Borders – One Stroke, Cold Light
teamLab, 2019, Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi
Artwork: https://borderless.teamlab.art/jp/ew/reversible_rotation_writing_cold_light_tokyo/
Artwork Video: https://youtu.be/6shJkTsVykQ

The Spatial Calligraphy artwork Reversible Rotation  transcends the boundaries of the display and continues across the Borderless World in a single stroke. This single stroke influences other artworks: it causes the 9 flowers in Forest of Flowers and People: Lost, Immersed and Reborn to scatter. The calligraphy stroke draws images such as bamboo as it flows seamlessly into other artworks.

The monitor Spatial Calligraphy rotates in the artwork space, every aspect rotating in the same direction. But because of the special characteristics of ultrasubjective space, it can appear to be rotating clockwise or counterclockwise.

Spatial Calligraphy is calligraphy drawn in space, a form of calligraphy that teamLab has been exploring since it was founded. The artwork reconstructs calligraphy in three dimensional space to express the depth, speed and power of the brush stroke, and that calligraphy is then flattened using the logical structure teamLab calls ultrasubjective space. The calligraphy shifts between two and three dimensions.

【Enlarged Artwork Space】
Walk, Walk, Walk: Search, Deviate, Reunite

teamLab, 2018, Interactive Digital Installation, Endless, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi, Voices: Yutaka Fukuoka, Yumiko Tanaka
Artwork: https://borderless.teamlab.art/jp/ew/walk/

This space is made of a group of anonymous and diverse figures. The figures keep walking and as they do the artwork moves. When visitors touch the figures, they react, sometimes stop, sometimes change the direction and choose a different path. Visitors make decisions and choices as they keep walking. If visitors physically stop, the figures in front of them continue to move and interchange.

The Zen expression “Hoho kore dojo” says every step is the place to learn. The figures of the work continue walking endlessly while confronting new situations. Walking after the figures or confronting new figures one after another the visitors also make choices along their own path.

The work is rendered in real time by a computer program, it is neither a prerecorded animation nor imagery on loop. The work as a whole is in constant change; previous states will never be repeated and can never be seen again.

Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives II
teamLab, 2019, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi
Artwork:https://borderless.teamlab.art/jp/ew/symbiotic/

Animals that are born in the Forest of Flowers and People  are made of the flowers of the forest. As the seasonal flowers slowly change, they bloom and die in an eternal cycle, continuously forming the shapes of animals. When people touch the animals, the flower petals scatter. If people continue to touch the animals, all of the flowers will scatter, and the animals will die and fade away.

The artwork is not a pre-recorded image that is played back: it is created by a computer program that continuously renders the work in real time. The interaction between people and the installation causes continuous change in the artwork: previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur. The picture at this moment can never be seen again.

The Way of the Sea, Flying Beyond Borders – Colors of Life
teamLab, 2018, Interactive Digital Installation, Endless, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi
Artwork: https://borderless.teamlab.art/jp/ew/way-of-the-sea-colors_flying/

This work begins when a shoal of fish, The Way of the Sea , leaves a room and crosses the boundaries of other works, sometimes influencing the works, and moves around freely.

People have their own color, and when they touch the fish, the fish are dyed that color.

This work is part of a series called The Way of Birds. “The way of the bird” is a saying in Zen which refers to the fact that unlike a human road, the road of the bird is not fixed. The road of the bird is free, unfettered, and leaves no trace. Here, the birds are replaced with fish.

The movement of thousands or tens of thousands of fish is beautiful and mysterious, like a single giant life form. The school of fish has neither a leader nor mutual consensus, but just moves on the simple basis of; if my neighbor moves, then I move, too. However, the biological mechanism that causes hundreds of fish to move at the same time is still enigmatic. It seems there is a universal principle that human beings do not yet understand. The group of trails of light drawn in the space have no meaning as a whole, while being influenced by the existence of people, the lines are drawn by the movement of each fish that seems to obey some kind of primitive rule.

The work is not a pre-recorded image that is played back; it is based on a computer program that continuously renders the work in real time. The interaction between people and the installation causes continuous change in the artwork; previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur. The picture at this moment can never be seen again.

【Artwork that Connect to Other Exhibition Worldwide】
Sketch Aquarium: Connected World

teamLab, 2013-, Interactive Digital Installation, Sound: Hideaki Takahashi

Artwork Video: https://youtu.be/DDoFpnz8nDI

The fish drawn by everyone swim around in this aquarium.

Color in a fish on the paper provided. See the picture you have drawn come to life in the massive aquarium in front of you, swimming together with the fish drawn by other people. If you touch the swimming fish, they will swim away. If you touch the food bags, you can also feed the fish.

The tuna you draw will transcend the boundaries of the artwork and swim out into the Sketch Aquariums and Sketch Oceans of exhibitions around the world. And the tuna drawn in other parts of the world may appear and swim in the Sketch Aquarium right in front of you.

Sharing Rock Mass, Transcending Space
teamLab, 2019, Interactive Digital Installation
Artwork: https://borderless.teamlab.art/jp/ew/sharingrock_tokyo/
Artwork Video: https://youtu.be/GVtLjUIb3Ts

A rock mass floats in the world of the teamLab Borderless museum in Shanghai. The rock mass floats through the hallway of teamLab Borderless Shanghai and sinks into the wall. The rock mass transcends the physical space of the museum itself, the part that sinks into the wall appears in the world of the teamLab Borderless museum in Tokyo.

When people touch the part of the rock mass emerging in Tokyo, it shines with blue light. This light flows to the rock mass sunken into the wall in Shanghai. When people touch the part of the rock mass sunken into the wall in Shanghai, it shines with a red light which flows to the rock mass here in Tokyo. When red light flows into the rock mass, it indicates that someone in Shanghai is touching the rock mass.
