The word “hanabi” literally means “fire of flowers,” but fireworks can be seen all over Japan, from the handheld fireworks sold at your local convenience store to the magnificent displays at large festivals. The roots of this tradition date back to the 17th century, when they were used to ward off evil spirits and negative energy during times of disaster. Furthermore, a noteworthy aspect of this culture is that fireworks symbolize “ephemeral beauty,” a spirituality that the Japanese have cherished and admired as an aesthetic.
