The Top 15 Firework Displays in Japan This Summer!

Firework displays have been a staple of Japanese summers for centuries. They attract tourists and residents alike to the culture-rich hubs in Japan to witness some of the best and most elaborate light shows in the world.

Hanabi, translating directly as flower fire, can be seen in every corner of Japan, whether they be sold at your local konbini or displayed beautifully in larger festivals. The significance of this tradition stems back to the 17th century when they were used to ward off evil spirits and bad energy during times of peril. Additionally and most notably within the culture, they represent ephemeral beauty, or hakanai bi – a philosophy that the Japanese have nurtured and romanticized. The intense yet fleeting beauty of a firework mirrors the reality of life itself which is also bold, beautiful and temporary. Another symbol of hakanai bi in Japan is the cherry blossom.

Hundreds of thousands of people gather every summer to see these beautiful festivals and displays take over the skies, fostering a sense of community across the whole country. There are around 800 firework displays in Japan held throughout 2026. We have selected 15 of the biggest displays, festivals and even competitions that will light up the sky near you.
