Starbucks Reserve®️Roastery Tokyo, opened on the 28th of February!

On the 28th of February 2019, Starbucks Reserve ®️ Roastery Tokyo opened in Naka-Meguro, marking the fifth of its kind in the world and the first shop in Japan. The Roastery began in 2014 in Seattle. Announced as “Starbucks’s uncompromising innovative coffee” it became the perfect place for coffee-lovers everywhere.

The design is the brain-child of one of the worlds most influential architects, Kengo Kuma. The unique look of the exterior was created using Cedar trees which are known for their vibrant hue and creates a modern Japanese look from the iconic fourth floor down to the first floor with a terrace view. This is the first Reserve store that has been designed entirely from the ground up. The interior is a brilliant blend of the traditional and the modern, creating a classy feel complete with Japanese influences such as the origami-themed ceiling and lampshades made of Japanese paper.

The first thing you will undoubtedly notice when you walk through the door will be the large roasting machine that stands about 17 metres at the centre of the shop. Cherry blossom motifs hang from the ceiling with 2100 individually crafted blossom motifs scattered around the shop, creating a beautiful atmosphere.

The first floor offers a unique experience with the main bar offering different blends of coffee beans from all over the world, which allows patrons to enjoy rare blends of coffee they’ve never tasted before. On the same floor, the Italian bakery “Princi”, the first in Japan has opened. It offers about 80 different kinds of bread and pastry that can be tasted at anytime.

The second floor houses Teavana. A space where tea-lovers can enjoy unique blends of teas and desserts reimagined with mixology techniques limited only to Tokyo. Drinks such as “Teavana Cream Soda Matcha” which looks like melon soda. Or “Pop’n Tea Sakura Jasmine” which contains an iceblock placed inside the drink itself. This menu of new and innovative blends allows an experience tea-lovers can only have here. This menu is also perfect for Instagram shots.

On the third floor, one can find Arriviamo Bar. This area is where coffee, wine, beer, cheese and ham snacks that match perfectly with alcohol are found. Limited only to the spring season “Spring Shower” lets you enjoy the sakura-viewing season in a glass, topped with a spray of Starbucks Reserve Cold Brew Coffee to create the image of rain falling on the sakura leaves. This unique cocktail that celebrates the Japanese Seasons and Japanese Whiskey can only be experienced in Japan.

The production line that bags the roasted beans on the 1st and 3rd floor is on the 4th floor, which is the top floor. Through a transparent tube, you can see the production and packing of the coffee as this is the place where Tokyo Roast is created and shipped off to the 1400 other Starbucks stores located all around Japan.

Mr. Mizuguchi, CEO of Starbucks Japan stated that it had been 23 years since Starbucks Japan first began contributing to global marketing. This Roastery will pave the way for all coffee-lovers across all Starbucks stores and will open the door to the next stage of customer experience and passion for coffee. With plans to open the next Roastery in Chicago, we watch in anticipation as Starbucks continues full speed ahead.
